Teutsch

Today the “Weingut Teutsch” is in hands of the third generation of the Teutsch-Family.
In the 1960s, Fritz Teutsch started to process grapes in his antiquated premises. Back then, they focused more on quantity. Throughout the years, improvements have been made to be able to focus on a higher quality.

The foundation in this regard was laid in 2002, when Martin Teutsch remodelled the cellar after a production break for about 10 years.
Improvements where also made in the vineyards, and gradually the yields where reduced so that a higher quality standard could be met.

Today, improvements are made in the agricultural production as well as in the cellar, in order to increase the quality of the wine.

Since 2017, the winery is managed by Florian Teutsch and his wife
Rebekka.

Our vineyards are located approximately 500 metres south from the village of Kurtinig, lying at an altitude of about 212 metres above sea level. The curved line on our label depicts the “Etsch”, the longest river of South Tyrol. Until the year 1817, the “Etsch” washed up alluvial soil which allows
our wines to have great potential. The soil here is robust, full-bodied and clayey. At the beginning of fermentation during the first 5-7 days, all of our red wines are “overpumped”, which means that the fermenting grape must is pumped off the bottom and is added on top of the same tank. This technique is labor-intensive, but a gentle way to keep the contact between the must and the grape skins. As a result, many substances are extracted from the grape skins. Also, due to the mostly high sugar content, a relatively high alcohol content is achieved.
The daily breeze coming from the lake Garda (called “Ora”), dries the grapes quickly after a rainfall. Thus, our grapes do not rot easily and we can harvest healthy grapes of good quality. We mostly produce dry wines.
